The 3rd Friday dance at the Guiding Star Grange in Greenfield, Massachusetts is so sit-in friendly that without the sit-ins, the official band would hardly know what to do with itself. We could probably figure it out, but the energy of a stage full of musicians, many of whom play a lot at sessions but rarely have a chance to play for dancing, can be downright exhilarating. Also, it tends to be fun, for the musicians, the dancers, and the caller, too. It’s infectious, in a good way.
There’s not the auditory space to accommodate electric instruments, but I don’t know that we’ve ever turned away anything acoustic. At the moment, during Covid, we ask that wind players test before coming and be thoughtful about where they sit, and everyone has to follow a bunch of keep-us-as-safe-as-possible protocols, so it’s not quite as simple as walking in with your fiddle and finding an empty chair, but once you jump through the entry hoops, you’re welcome to join us.
Brought to you by Annika Amstutz, Joe Blumenthal, Becky Hollingsworth, and a revolving series of guest host musicians.
